Why do I always gain weight before losing any?

Asked 4 years ago

Every time I start and exercise program or diet, I gain weight before I start to lose any weight. Why is this?

This could be happening for several reasons:

  • You may be building muscle faster than you’re dropping fat.
  • You may not be eating enough.
  • You may be stressing too much.

When you start working out, your body may not be used to the strain which will cause inflammation in your muscles. This inflammation results in your body retaining water to heal the muscles, which will cause some initial weight gain. Once your body adapts to your new routine, the inflammation and water retention will subside along with the weight gain.

When you start a new workout program, you may be gaining muscle, which is heavier and denser than fat, leading to the scale going up even though you can visibly notice that you have lost fat. After a few weeks, your muscle growth will slow down and you will notice that your weight will start to drop.
