What makes a CrossFit shoe a CrossFit shoe?

I have seen a number of training shoes marked as CrossFit shoes but cannot seem to tell the difference between a regular training shoe and a CrossFit shoe. What makes a shoe good for CrossFit?

Most CrossFit shoes will have a flat sole and some reinforced areas, such as a heel cap for handstand push-ups or reinforced inner edges for rope climbs.

I think that these 3 things make a CrossFit shoe:

  1. A stable and hard base with some cushion in the forefoot and a small heel drop, so that you can run shorter distances in them but also feel the ground when doing heavy weightlifting.
  2. An outsole which wraps around the midfoot so you can do rope climbs.
  3. A solid toebox for weightlifting.

CrossFit shoes typically have flat and stable soles, they are durable, the toebox is reinforced for movements like burpees, and the instep is designed to grip for rope climbs.

In my opinion, a good CrossFit shoe is similar to a good CrossFit athlete. They are good at a lot of things, but not terrible or fantastic at any one particular thing.

CrossFit shoes have a stable heel to squat and perform Olympic Weightlifting in, but you wouldn’t wear them in an Olympic Weightlifting competition. They are good enough to run a 400 meter and the occasional mile in, but you wouldn’t want to wear them in a marathon.
