How do you keep yourself motivated for early morning workouts?

It is definitely an acquired time frame for training and it is certainly not for everyone! That being said, I find it helps if you change up your routine every now and then and go later in the day. It is important to stop beating yourself up if you aren't feeling motivated in the morning. I have found that as you get closer to a goal weight or whatever goal you have set, you'll be more motivated about your progress and your passion alone will drive you out of bed to smash those goals!

I work nights, so I really don't have any choice! It doesn't matter if I feel motivated or not, because I have goals that I want to achieve, so I just go workout as soon as I wake up. I often look at my "before" pictures, and that is all the motivation I ever need!

I tend to just go to the gym when my body naturally wakes up. I can't do early morning workouts. 9 am is the earliest I can manage. I find that I don't have any energy or motivation to workout before 9 am.

I get up at 4:30 am every day to workout. Over time, my body has just gotten used to it, and now I actually prefer it! When I go in the evening, I have trouble feeling motivated as I feel as if I am missing something or should be doing something else instead. At 4:30 in the morning, I know that everyone else is still asleep and I can train in peace.

I used to hate it, but then I started taking a pre-workout first thing in the morning to get me used to waking up, and after about a week I got used to waking up early to work out and now I don’t need the pre-workout anymore.

Force yourself to get out of bed and drink a pre-workout or caffeine source of choice, like coffee or an energy drink. That way, you will be forced to go workout. Take pride in the fact that you are working on your goals while the rest of the world is sleeping!

If it is a matter of completely missing a workout or just going later in the day, I will simply go later. I can’t force myself to do anything, including forcing myself to get up early to workout. Working out is a huge passion for me, but I’m not going to be miserable while doing it. That isn’t motivation to me!

I'm always at the gym by 6 am on Sundays. My motivation is that I am there to better myself. My grandmother, mother, brother and sister all have type 2 diabetes and that is a huge motivator for me to workout. The other big motivation is that there is almost no one at the gym on Sunday mornings, so I can take my time and not feel rushed by someone waiting for me to finish.

It is by no means easy, but I just keep reminding myself why I am doing this. I’m tired of being overweight. I’m tired of knee pain. My wife is pregnant and I want to be able to play with my kids without getting tired after just 5 minutes. I think it is important to find your "why" and use that as motivation.

After a while, it becomes a habit and you have to force yourself to get up early to work out. I lay out my clothes the night before so that I don’t have any time to talk myself out of it. Once you create a habit, it will become very routine and you might actually start looking forward to it.

I started booking group exercise classes for early in the morning. They charge you extra if you don’t cancel at least 8 hours before the class, so that’s enough motivation to drag me out of bed!

I find it helps if you find a friend that is willing to train with you in the morning. That way, you'll be motivated to wake up because you don't want to leave your friend hanging at the gym.
