Are free weights or machines better for building muscle?

What is the difference between free weights and machines when trying to build muscle?

In my opinion, the machines tend to be slightly easier and it is much more difficult to get your form wrong on a machine, making them a better option for beginners. That being said, I would suggest that you add more weight to the machine than you would for free weights to achieve the same stimulus.

I prefer free weights to machines. I feel that the free weights hit the muscles much better than the machines do, but I like using the machines for repetition and form. My suggestion would be to have a combination of both in your workout routine.

Free weights tend to force you to use your stability muscles more to control the weight. Free weights also tend to activate the muscle better, leading to quicker muscle growth.
