Isotonic muscle contractions are contractions in which the muscle length changes while generating force. During an isotonic contraction, the muscle maintains constant tension while changing in length.

Isotonic contractions can be either concentric muscle contractions or eccentric muscle contractions.

Concentric Muscle Contractions

A concentric muscle contraction is a type of muscle contraction in which the muscles shorten while generating force, thereby overcoming resistance.

Eccentric Muscle Contractions

An eccentric muscle contraction is a type of muscle contraction in which the muscles lengthen while generating force.

Eccentric contractions can be either voluntary or involuntary muscle contractions.
