The ketogenic diet is a very low-carb, high-fat diet. It involves drastically reducing your carbohydrate intake to below 50 grams of carbohydrates per day and replacing these lost calories with fat.

When you replace your carbohydrates with fat, your body will eventually run out of glycogen to use as fuel. This typically takes between 3 and 4 days. Your body will then start to break down protein and fat as an alternative source of energy, resulting in weight loss. This process is known as ketosis.

Once your body is in ketosis, it becomes exceptionally efficient at burning fat as a fuel source and also converts fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy to the brain.
